Abstract: The Maltese islands have the highest density of World Heritage Sites per square kilometre anywhere in the world. The Megalithic Temples – the oldest free- standing structures in the world, the Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum – an underground cemetery, and the City of Valletta – a fortified city of Baroque masterpieces.
